Was it actively justified here considering Ash really did deserve to lose since he didn't actively train his Pokemon in Kanto and relied on pure luck and pragmatism.

Ash tells Richie hes sure hell win, and good luck. Later, Richie is in the stadium, and the battle begins! He and the other trainer are soon both down to one Pokemon.
