As far as building a board I wouldn't be much help, but check out what builders like Subsonic (Pulse 40), Longboard Larry (Walkabout), Sk8Kings (Balster), and Roe (Triton/Mermaid) are doing with their boards. Typically you want to be able to stand over the front truck to get the most leverage. You may also want to consider some kind of wheel.
