Forward-facing can be a difficult pose to pull off for several creatures - the dang snout/beak gets in the way a lot. I would suggest trying 3/4 views to start and maybe not worry too much about being 'anatomically correct'. A lot of animation, for example, bends the rules of anatomy as long as it 'looks good/close enough' for the subject.
